Japan's Music Download Sales Total 14.1 Bil. Yen in Jan.-June

Aug. 10--TOKYO -- Music download sales in Japan came to around 14.16 billion yen in the January-June period, generated predominantly by mobile phone users for ring melodies, the Recording Industry Association of Japan said Wednesday in its first-ever release of such data.
Data from 42 member companies of the association showed 96 percent, or about 13.59 billion yen worth of music, was downloaded via mobile phones, while downloads by personal computer users amounted to around 540 million yen, the association said.
Download frequency was some 109 million for mobiles and about 2 million for PCs.
Last Thursday, Apple Computer Inc. opened the Japan unit of its iTunes Music Store for music downloads by PC users. Apple said it sold 1 million songs in just the first four days.
