OKC-Based Will Rogers World Airport's Taxiway Paving to Be Funded By Federal Grant

Posted on: Wednesday, 10 August 2005, 21:00 CDT

The Oklahoma City Airport Trust has been awarded a $5.6 million grant by the U.S. Department of Transportation to pave the shoulders on a taxiway at Will Rogers World Airport.

The construction funded by this grant will be the latest in a series of enhancements, along with the new terminals and parking facility, which will make air travel in Oklahoma City more convenient and safe, said U.S. Rep. Ernest Istook, R-Oklahoma City.

The taxiway shoulder project will add a 35-foot shoulder to each side of Taxiway E. Taxiway E runs the entire length of the east runway, which is one of two primary runways used at Will Rogers World Airport. The additional 35 feet on each side of the runway will create 145 feet of paved surface. The shoulders provide extra safety for an aircraft and its passengers by providing additional surface for emergency use.

A strong and safe infrastructure is key to maintaining an outstanding airport, said Luther Trent, airport director. This project will not only be a great improvement to our taxiway system but will enhance overall aircraft safety.

The grant was awarded through the Department of Transportation's discretionary grant awards program in a nationally competitive process. The project will take about six months to complete.

Taxiway A, which parallels the primary west runway, was enhanced with shoulders in 1993. Airport officials next hope to add shoulders to four additional taxiways.
