Linksys Networking Infrastructure Powers the Nation's Largest Gaming Network at QuakeCon 2005

GRAPEVINE, Texas, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Linksys(R), a Division of Cisco Systems, Inc., the recognized leading provider of VoIP, wireless and networking hardware for the consumer, Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) and small business markets, today announced it is once again the networking hardware of choice for the QuakeCon(TM) video game festival and tournament being held this week at the Gaylord Resort in Texas.
QuakeCon is a LAN party dedicated to fans of id Software's games. Workshops and roundtables will be held to discuss games, technology and opinions on the gaming industry. During the course of the four days, a Bring Your Own Computer (BYOC) LAN will be in place for participants to plug into and play games such as DOOM 3(R), QUAKE 3 Arena(R), Return to Castle Wolfenstein(R), and Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory(TM), along with other games and mods. The gamers will use switches from Linksys as their link to the network operations center which will host over 400 simultaneous games.
More than 200 web-managed 24-port 10/100 Ethernet Switches with Gigabit expansion slots (PC22224) will team with an equal number of Gigabit Ethernet Modules and Cisco's Catalyst 6509 Switch to allow QuakeCon's 6,000-plus attendees to play their favorite id Software titles against one another. Using the Linksys equipment and over 10 miles of Cat-5 cable, over 3,500 gaming connections will be made. Despite the size of the network, the Linksys equipment's ease of use enable it to be assembled in under 36 hours.
"We realize that holding the networking sponsor role at QuakeCon is a privilege and we are proud to have been selected for that role over the last seven years because gamers have always been an important customer base for us," said Mike Wagner, director of worldwide marketing, Linksys. "Providing equipment that is able to handle the substantial workload of keeping each year's attendees continuously connected to the network for four days is our way of recognizing their contribution to our success."
Held at the Gaylord Texan Resort, QuakeCon 2005 will continue through August 14 and is open to the public with no admission fee. Joining Linksys in sponsoring this year's event is id Software, NVIDIA, Activision, Intel, Creative, Alienware, GameStop, Razer, and Newegg.com.
