Ceremony Marks Debut of iParking System in San Francisco's Japan Center

Posted on: Thursday, 13 November 2003, 06:00 CST

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 13, 2003--Launching a new era in parking management, Cyberonix Inc., and Tepco Systems Corp. will introduce their Internet-based iParking solution at Japan Center's Miyako Hotel at a special ceremony attended by civic and government leaders on Nov. 14. The iParking system, designed to help reduce pollution, energy costs and improve efficiency, integrates garage devices such as fans, sensors, cameras and ticket machines with the Internet.

Based on Java(TM) technology from Sun Microsystems, which provides a safe, secure platform for industrial control, iParking coordinates the functions of existing garage equipment, connecting parking systems, customers and management quickly and efficiently, over the Internet. iParking can also provide parking management with improved monitoring and accountability for revenues and taxes, safety, security, air quality and reporting, resulting in enhanced services for San Francisco residents, workers and visitors.

The launch in the Japan Center Parking Garage, located in the Japan Town section of San Francisco on Post Street, marks the successful completion of the first iParking system. This City garage is now equipped with new iParking services that include Air Quality Management, to ensure clean, smog-free air and ambient temperature using sensor and fan controls; Smart Digital Visual Monitoring (S-DVM), which provides Internet-enabled "smart" cameras to detect motion and unusual behavior patterns for better security; and License Plate Recognition, which integrates the same smart camera technology to scan car license plates and match them with tickets. These services can solve many of the problems associated with lost tickets, while providing customer loyalty programs to the local neighborhood.

"By installing iParking in the Japan Center Parking Garage, we can save around $1,600 on our energy bills each month just with the Air Quality Management services alone," explained Richard Hashimoto, corporate administrator of the City of San Francisco Japan Center Garage Corp. "With California's energy shortage, I'm glad we can support the environment and improve garage operations with one simple solution."

iParking is a collaboration between Cyberonix Inc., an Oakland-based Java technology engineering firm, and Tepco Systems Corpo., the systems arm of Tokyo Electric Power Company, Japan's leading electricity company. Sun Microsystems and Mitsubishi Electric are among the technology vendors supporting this endeavor.
