Tokyo, Aug. 11 (Jiji Press)--Sanyo Electric Co. said Thursday it has developed a single chip that has read/write functions for the CD, DVD and High-Definition DVD.
The new chip allows electronic appliance makers to save chip space by 60 pct, compared with the use of two chips, Sanyo said.
Such makers will also be able to cut costs by about 1,000 yen per appliance by using Sanyo's new chip, company officials said.
Sanyo will start mass production of the chip next spring or later for use as a key component in HD DVD players and recorders.
The HD DVD is promoted as a next-generation optical disc by a group of companies led by Toshiba Corp. and NEC Corp. . The group is competing with another group led by Sony Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. that is promoting the Blu-ray Disc.END
