Grant Career Center Expands Online STEM Offerings to Prepare Students for College and Career Success
First students complete online chemistry offering to prepare for college level courses using cloud-based learning platform from itslearning
BURLINGTON, Mass., May 31, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Focused on expanding its offerings while continually managing a tight budget, Grant Career Center has developed and published an innovative online chemistry course expanding its offerings and making academic preparation more accessible for all of its students. This represents the first of several projects that will make academic preparation more accessible to GCC’s traditional vocational students, improving both the skills they bring to the workforce as well as increasing options for college and university study.
Working with a collaborative group of chemistry teachers from across Clermont County, Cathy Macdonald Ed.D., Technology Supervisor for GCC, has coordinated the development of a chemistry curriculum designed to prepare GCC students for college level chemistry. Making this course available online through the itslearning platform, Macdonald has provided a flexible option for students to complete this important college credential.
“Bringing fundamental college prep courses online is a great way to increase our offerings to our students who are typically scheduled to work on more career focused programs during regular school hours,” says Dr. Macdonald. “itslearning’s functionality and tools make it perfect for STEM initiatives like this chemistry class, and directly aligns with the flex-credit requirements in place for Ohio schools. The product platform is much more sophisticated than other options available on the market today, and it is extremely easy to use so teachers and students can work and collaborate from anywhere.”
“Grant Career Center has executed this project extremely well,” said Mike Bronder, Director of Business Development for itslearning. “At a time when so many organizations are struggling with what offerings they should cut due to budget pressure, GCC has found a way to actually increase their offerings, and in a very meaningful way that will serve their students well.”
With the success of this initial chemistry course, Grant has already coordinated the collaboration for 3 more addressing college preparation needs in Physics, Math and English, and are looking forward to rolling those out in the next semester.
