The website’s new Carb Planning Tool helps people with diabetes estimate their carbohydrate intake, while its new Diabetes Product Directory allows users to learn about currently available diabetes products in numerous categories, plus read user reviews and even rate the products themselves.

DiabetesCare.net, the fastest growing, advertising-free diabetes resource on the Internet, has launched its latest free-to-use resources for people with diabetes: a Carb Planning Tool and a Diabetes Product Directory.

Carb Planning Tool

The current exchange system for carbohydrate counting is a well-developed effort to help people with diabetes estimate their carbohydrate intake. Diabetes educators have devised their own ways to educate their patients with food models, pictures, measuring cups, printed sample meal plans, etc.

Complementing those efforts, DiabetesCare.net has rolled-out a new, free-to-use Carb Planning Tool for people with diabetes to design a daily meal plan to meet their carbohydrate goals. The tool is also a handy teaching aid for diabetes educators.

Carb Planning Tool users select a caloric level, the carbohydrate goal, and then divide the carbohydrate grams or carb exchanges throughout the day, based on their personal daily meal pattern and medication routine. Users can then adjust the meal planner to create food combinations for meals and snacks by selecting specific foods from lists, and building a meal, or an entire day’s meal plan. The meal plan can be printed for future reference or to share with a healthcare provider.

“I have always wanted a computer-based instructional tool to teach my clients carb counting,” remarks DiabetesCare.net’s Sharon Howard, RD, CDE. “Now, with the DiabetesCare.net Carb Planning Tool, I can pull up this tool in a session with my patients and demonstrate the Exchange System. The client can take a copy, and create more plans at home. So, instead of tracking what they already ate, my clients can plan a carb-controlled meal before they eat.”

“Since many people with type 2 diabetes also need to lose weight,” adds Howard, “this tool offers a unique feature of planning calories, as well as protein and fat. If you only concern yourself with the carbohydrates, you can be controlling your blood sugar, but gaining weight from non-carbohydrate calories. This tool helps you manage your blood sugar and your weight!”

Howard also points out that registered dietitians can calculate a meal plan that also controls protein for kidney disease or fat for heart disease. Dietitians can emphasize a balanced diet, with fruits, vegetables, and calcium rich dairy foods. Additional lists are included such as combination foods, fast foods, and sweets. “The better you plan, the more flexible and creative your diet can be,” says Howard.

Diabetes Product Directory

With hundreds and hundreds of diabetes products available to people with diabetes these days, knowing what’s out there can often be a daunting task for the newly diagnosed diabetes patient or even a “diabetes veteran.”

With that in mind, DiabetesCare.net created a “Diabetes Product Directory” where visitors can learn about the latest products in categories such as Blood Glucose Meters, Insulin Pens, Insulin Pumps and Supplies, Pen Needles, Syringes, and more. Website visitors can link directly to the manufacturers’ websites for more information about the product. In addition, as part of their free registration, DiabetesCare.net members can sign-in to the website, read reviews of the products written by other members, rate a product, or write their own review based on personal usage of the products.

“DiabetesCare.net’s new Diabetes Product Directory further enhances our commitment of building a community and creating a one-stop Internet resource to help people manage their diabetes, and also inform their caregivers,” remarks DiabetesCare.net Managing Editor/Webmaster Mike Boyle. “This directory is a work-in-progress that will be constantly updated to keep up with changing technologies and the newest trends in diabetes products.”

About DiabetesCare.net: Launched on Feb. 1, 2010, DiabetesCare.net is an advertising-free one-stop Internet destination with the sole purpose of helping people learn the latest news and trends to help themselves, a loved one, or a friend manage their diabetes. And for those at risk, prevent occurrence of the disease.
