British Airways suspends all check-ins at Heathrow after catering dispute
LONDON, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- British Airways has suspended all its check-ins at the Heathrow Airport following an industrious dispute over catering on BA flights, Sky News television reported on Thursday.
The suspension came as some BA staff stopped work in sympathy with staff sacked by the Gate Gourmet company which supplies food to BA flights. "We have had to suspend check-in for all our flights at Heathrow Terminal 1 and Terminal 4," a BA spokeswoman was quoted as saying.
The Transport and General Workers Union said 800 workers at Gatemet had been sacked since a row flared at Heathrow Airport on Wednesday.
The union's general secretary Tony Woodley called on BA to put pressure on the American-owned catering firm to return to the negotiating table and accused the company of behaving in a "disgraceful" fashion and said it had unilaterally decided to reduce the pay and conditions of its staff.
