UNCG to Offer New Online Option for Nonprofit Management Certificate

Flexible learning alternatives are allowing nonprofit administrators to learn when and where they choose, without having to travel to campus.

Today UNCG announced plans to offer students in its post-baccalaureate Nonprofit Management Certificate Program a new option for completing their coursework. Beginning with the 2011 summer session, each of the eight courses in the program will be offered online.

“Adding a new online option allows us to extend our program to students who are unable to travel to campus or who simply like the convenience of learning when and where they choose,” says Darlene Rodriguez, Ph.D., program coordinator.

The Nonprofit Management Certificate is tailored to the practical, day-to-day needs of nonprofit administrators. Students complete 15 credit hours of instruction, including required courses in nonprofit management and leadership, philanthropy and resource development, and budgeting and financial management. Electives are offered in marketing, strategic planning, grant writing, nonprofit law and volunteer management.

“I have frequently applied what I learned directly back to my work,” says Susanna McGrath, a graduate who is vice president of operations at the nonprofit Children’s Home Society of North Carolina. “The program has given me a broader and richer perspective on the entire nonprofit sector.”

The credit hours earned can be applied towards a UNCG Master’s degree in Public Affairs ““ making the program a great first step for students who aren’t yet ready to commit to an advanced degree “It also is a great option for those who already have a Master’s but would like to hone their nonprofit management skills,” Rodriguez says.

As part of the required curriculum, students work in teams to create development plans for real nonprofit organizations. One of the organizations benefiting from their efforts is the United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro.

“It was a great benefit to us to get new perspectives from the students in the program,” said Altina Layman, director of marketing and community affairs for the organization. “We came away with lots of solid information and ideas we are considering implementing for next year. Their work was fresh and thorough, and we consider it a win-win for both the United Arts Council and UNCG students.”
