Aug. 12--A retired Coast Guard officer will become the Port of Tacoma's new director of security.
Ramon Ortiz, 42, who served with the Coast Guard for 22 years, was the commanding officer for the U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team in Seattle.
In that job, Ortiz said he helped develop tactics for other anti-terrorism teams around the country, and provided security for major events around the region.
The port's previous security director left last winter, said Mike Wasem, the port's spokesman.
Ortiz also worked with the Coast Guard on the East Coast, helped provide waterway security during the 1996 Olympics, and served with the international division of the U.S. Marine Corps' Special Operations Training Group.
He is also in his third year of law school at Seattle University.
