Pennsylvania Governor Rendell Lowers State Homeland Security Threat Level for the Mass Transit Sector to Yellow

Posted on: Friday, 12 August 2005, 18:00 CDT

HARRISBURG, Pa., Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- In conjunction with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's decision to lower the national threat level for the mass transit sector, Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell today lowered the state's Homeland Security Threat Level for the mass transit portion of the transportation sector to Yellow, or Elevated Risk.

"While I am lowering the threat level at this time, I urge county and local officials, transportation authorities and the general public to remain alert," said Governor Rendell. "I ask everyone to continue to be aware of what is going on around them and in their communities."

The Governor asked residents who observe suspicious or unusual activity to contact 911, local law enforcement or the PA State Police Criminal Intelligence Center (PaCIC) at 1-888-292-1919.

On July 7, Governor Rendell raised the threat level for the mass transit sectors to Orange, or High Risk. This affected regional and inter-city passenger rail, subway and bus systems in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia as well as ferries with more than 150 passengers.

The Governor's Office, through appropriate commonwealth agencies, continues to communicate on a regular basis with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of Defense to discuss and share relevant intelligence information and threat analysis.
