Over 500,000 Android Devices Activated Each Day
According to Google’s Android chief Andy Rubin, consumers are activating over half a million Android devices every day, and gadgets running the operating system are growing 4.4 percent week-to-week.
Rubin made his announcement on Twitter on Tuesday. He did not say how many of the devices were smartphones and how many were tablet computers.
He said on December 8 that daily Android phone activations had surpassed 300,000.
Android smartphones have a greater hand in the smartphone market share than Apple’s iPhone, according to industry tracker comScore.
Google’s operating system is being used in smartphones made by manufacturers like Samsung Electronics Co., HTC Corp. and Motorola Mobility.
According to comScore, Android smartphones dethroned BlackBerry in January by capturing 31.2 percent of the U.S. market and that share grew to 34.7 percent by the end of March.
ComScore said Apple was close behind RIM with iPhones commanding 25.5 percent of the market.
Apple said it sold 18.65 million iPhones last quarter and 4.69 million iPad tablet computers.
