Comcast to Double Downstream Speeds For New England Comcast High-Speed Internet Customers

BOSTON, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Comcast, the nation's number one broadband provider, today announced that it will double downstream speeds for New England residential Comcast High-Speed Internet customers allowing them to take full advantage of the richest broadband content and applications that the Internet has to offer. Downstream speeds for Comcast High-Speed Internet customers will be increased to 3Mbps from 1.5Mbps at no additional cost.
The speed increase will be automatic and customers will not be required to download any special files or upgrade their connections. To take advantage of the new speeds, customers need only to unplug the power cord of their modems, wait 60 seconds and plug it back in.
"Comcast continues to redefine broadband and create more customer value," said Kevin Casey, senior vice president for Comcast. "In survey after survey, our customers tell us what they value most in an Internet service is speed. We're addressing this by providing a faster broadband speed at no additional cost."
The doubled downstream speed allows customers to do many of the activities that they enjoy even faster. For example, if a customer purchases a CD online consisting of 15 songs, the typical download at 1.5Mbps takes about six minutes. With the increased speed of 3Mbps, the same download requires only about three minutes. Specific examples, include:
The 3Mbps downstream speed will also provide customers with faster access to Comcast's premier broadband customer destination site at http://www.comcast.net/ -- a site built exclusively for a broadband connection. The company has added several unique features that optimize customers' Internet experiences including 'The Fan,' an innovative broadband multimedia player, 'The Assistant,' a personalized toolbar with always-on utilities, and additional broadband content from leading providers such as E!, G4, The Weather Channel, IFC, Planeta Networks, Atom Films and others.
The company also recently announced that it is offering Comcast Rhapsody, the country's leading Internet jukebox service, that provides subscribers with unlimited access to a vast library of music from all five major labels plus more than 200 independent music labels.
"We're thrilled to unveil the new Comcast.net, enhanced for our 100 percent pure broadband network," said Greg Butz, senior vice president of Marketing and Business Development for Comcast High-Speed Internet. "Comcast is leading the way by pairing the power of our broadband network with the applications that showcase the best in broadband content. Along with our recent move to double downstream speeds, the enhancements to Comcast.net are further proof of our commitment to innovation and providing more value to our customers."
Today Comcast also announced the availability of its Comcast Home Networking service, featuring speeds of 4Mbps downstream and 384Kbps upstream, which is now available throughout New England. Comcast Home Networking allows customers to connect up to five computers or devices, share equipment such as printers and scanners and swap files among connected computers. Comcast technicians install the service professionally, including printer and file sharing and customers receive support with easy-to-use tools and around-the- clock dedicated customer support.
