FOR this year's Pikom-Computimes ICT Awards, the ICT Software of the Year category is the most keenly contested. This development is an indication of the growth in the software sector of the local information and communications technology (ICT) industry.
AutoCount XP with Pocket AutoCount (BCE Software): AutoCount XP with Pocket AutoCount is an accounting/financial software which combines personal computer (PC)-based technology and personal digital assistant (PDA)-based mobile software technology. It is designed to meet the business needs of the small and medium-sized industries (SMIs), and serves as the back-end to Pocket AutoCount.
Using a Pocket PC, the software allows the user to check or perform customer and supplier information and outstanding payments, stock availability status, customer and supplier price history, quotation, delivery orders, sales orders, and invoicing.
FirewallNow! (InternetNow Sdn Bhd): FirewallNow! is a host-based server firewall which protects any server with Internet access from all incoming hacking threats and outgoing info-stealing Trojans. It is designed to prevent any illegitimate programs from accessing the Internet or sending out information without authorisation. FirewallNow! was developed using MS Visual C++, and comprises the Soft ICE debugging tool and Installshield installation program.
Boasting an affordable price tag, FirewallNow! should appeal to local SMIs and encourage them to implement appropriate ICT security measures within their organizations.
IMS Education (Integrated Knowledge & Campus Management Sdn Bhd): IMS Education is an integrated management system for educational institutions.
It comprises six fully integrated and dynamic modules geared to deliver a ``self-service'' education system and simplify the management of campuses, by eliminating manual unnecessary tasks and paperwork. The IMS e-Learning module can accommodate the demands of mass and customised education, while addressing the higher demand for personal attention and self-directed learning.
The portal, meanwhile, is a comprehensive suite of tools consisting of a content management system, industry and academic portal, forum, and forms wizard management system to facilitate information flow and manage knowledge assets.
InsureConnect (I-Systems Consulting Sdn Bhd): InsureConnect is a Web-based end-to-end intelligent insurance processes automation solution specially designed and developed to help insurers automate their mission-critical operations processes. The processes include distribution channels management and sales activities, new business submission and underwriting, claims management, and customer service management.
It is also designed to enhance policy persistency rate, provide quick-response services to distribution channels and customers, while reducing overall operating costs by reducing paper usage, reducing data-entry duplication, integrating with back-end systems, and through the timely distribution of information to all operational sectors.
Microlink Banking Solutions (Microlink Systems Sdn Bhd): Microlink Banking Solutions (MiBS) is a suite of integrated banking solutions for both conventional and Islamic banking environments designed to meet the needs of global financial institutions.
MiBS operates on a three-tier client-server OLTP architecture in an open environment for smooth and distributed time and low bandwidth requirements. These characteristics permit an MiBS user to be hardware independent, thereby reducing maintenance and upgrading costs, and at the same time, allow for fast and efficient modifications to the computer and network system to meet changes in the market and new technology requirements.
MiBS also incorporates various integrated payment and delivery channels such as Internet banking, phone banking, intelligent device banking, ATMS, and other electronic banking facilities.
School Management System (Perridot Systems Sdn Bhd): The School Management System (SMS) is an integrated ICT solution to help Malaysian schools manage their administration, communications and information sharing needs easily and cost-effectively.
It can be installed locally at the school to run on a standalone intranet configuration or remotely hosted by an application service provider (ASP). With the ASP model, parents can keep themselves updated with the school's development and their children's progress. It also allows administrators to create reports and gather information that is crucial to proper decision making.
Current modules include Curriculum Management, Students/Staff Records Management, System Administration, Staff & Student ID Card, Student Leaving Certificate & Testimonial, Examination & E-Report Card, Staff Performance & Administration, E-Attendance, and School Announcement & News.
SmartScan (Intelligence Systems Sdn Bhd): SmartScan is a suite of Smart Tools designed for assessment applications in schools. It utilises Neuro-Fuzzy artificial intelligence techniques to capture optical marks flexibly and reliably. Expert knowledge is also embedded in the system to assist teachers to analyse and interpret the results.
One component worth highlighting is SmartSet, a program to help teachers to organize and set question papers.
SmartSet scans questions available from books or past year examination papers, and stores them in digital format. The mammoth question bank to be created in time to come will relief teachers from tedious processes of setting examination questions so that more time can be spent for teaching and nurturing students.
Originally designed for schools, colleges and universities, SmartScan has now matured into a flexible product serving a diverse range of businesses and industries, which include SMIs, survey and research companies, certification and benchmarking authorities, productivity monitoring bodies, and healthcare authorities.
MERP Systems by MERP Software (M) Sdn Bhd: MERP is a locally developed enterprise resource planning (ERP) system which incorporates global technologies to meet local requirements. It is designed to address issues found in many foreign ERP packages such as lack of integration and customisation, and also high cost of implementation, especially for the SMIs.
MERP includes modules such as System Manager, Accounting Information System, Manufacturing Resources Planning System, Human Resource Management System, Customer Relationship Management System, Supplier Chain Management System, and Mobile PDA Solutions. All the modules are linked and integrated with each other. The system runs on Windows NT/2000 Server platform and Microsoft SQL Server 7.0/2000 as the back-end database server. It utilises Visual Basic 6.0 programming language and Seagate Crystal Reports 8.5 report writing tool.
