Shuttle America Begins Service Sept. 1

Posted on: Wednesday, 17 August 2005, 06:00 CDT

Besides its sale of Atlantic Southeast Airlines, Delta Air Lines on Monday announced further changes in its regional airlines network, including service to Cincinnati.

A new airline, Shuttle America, begins service Sept. 1 with round- trip flights from Detroit to Salt Lake City and Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. Round-trip flights from Salt Lake City to Indianapolis and Columbus, Ohio, will be added Oct. 15.

The airline will be part of Delta's Delta Connection network, which includes Cincinnati-based Comair, which Delta owns, Chautauqua Airlines, owned by Republic Airways, and Atlantic Southeast. Other cities targeted for Shuttle America service include Billings, Mont., Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Portland, Ore., San Diego and Seattle. Delta did not say how many of those cities would be served from Cincinnati on Shuttle America; other Delta flights offer service there.

With Shuttle America's launch, Delta is touting the debut in its fleet of the Embraer E-170 jet. It offers a longer range with a higher passenger and baggage capacity than most current regional- class jet aircraft. For Delta, it will be designed to carry 70 passengers, including six in first class.

Delta on Monday also announced expanded service on Freedom Airlines, a Delta Connection carrier it signed in May. Freedom, a subsidiary of Mesa Air Group Inc., will fly round trips from Orlando, Fla., to six cities: Austin, Texas, Charlottesville, Va., Chattanooga, Tenn., Fort Wayne, Ind., Jackson, Miss., and Northwest Arkansas Regional airport near Bentonville. The new flights begin in October.

Freedom service from Orlando to nine existing destinations, including Columbus, Ohio, will grow by the end of the year.
