Fujitsu Delivers Adaptive IT Infrastructure for SAP NetWeaver

ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 17, 2003--As a first step towards computing on demand, Fujitsu PC Corporation and Fujitsu Siemens Computers together presented FlexFrame for mySAP(TM) Business Suite during this year's SAPPHIRE(R) '03 conference being held in Orlando, Florida.
With key features like software services on demand, scaling from small to large systems without downtime and flexible, easy to handle high availability this innovative IT service infrastructure solution is an ideal fit for the adaptive computing infrastructure of SAP NetWeaver(TM).
The Business Critical Computing solution FlexFrame for mySAP Business Suite, developed in close cooperation with Fujitsu Siemens Computers, SAP AG and Network Appliance, significantly reduces installation and operating costs. The first pilot projects for FlexFrame are already running and first users report a Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) reduction of more than 30 per cent. Siemens AG for example, the global technology company, is planning to use FlexFrame for their SAP Enterprise Portal implementation, which will eventually support approximately 400,000 users. This is one of the world's largest portal projects.
FlexFrame offers seamless scalability from small systems with some 50 users to large systems with several thousand users. The services used by an SAP solution, a database instance, central instance or application instance, have been fully virtualized and can be switched dynamically between the available servers.
Dr. Joseph Reger, Chief Technology Officer at Fujitsu Siemens Computers, commented: "We reduced the TCO substantially through on-demand provisioning and other autonomic features in FlexFrame. This was possible because for the first time, all services of the mySAP software suite are virtualized."
"FlexFrame for mySAP Business Suite is a powerful complement to our unified storage products," said Mark Santora, Senior Vice President of marketing at Network Appliance. "Together, our systems support enterprise customers' goal of reducing complexity and cutting costs."
"The different layers of computing, networking, storage and control are clearly separated and allow flexible scaling of all resources independently," stated Wolfgang Becker, Vice President, Adaptive Computing Infrastructure initiative, SAP AG. "Within the Adaptive Computer Infrastructure initiative, SAP realized this vision by FlexFrame as a pilot project jointly with Fujitsu Siemens Computers. We also have successfully realized the implementation within a customer project. Therefore, I particularly would like to thank Fujitsu Siemens Computers for their active support in evaluating and developing the prototype."
FlexFrame makes optimal usage of innovative components like PRIMERGY BX300 Blade server and market leading enterprise storage devices of Network Appliance. It uses the Linux operating system. The database servers used are PRIMERGY 4 and 8-processor servers -- likewise running under Linux -- or alternatively the Solaris/SPARC-based PRIMEPOWER servers.
FlexFrame is being demonstrated live in the booths of Fujitsu Limited and Network Appliance whereas the SAP adaptive computing infrastructure will be presented at the SAP NetWeaver booth at SAPPHIRE '03 in Orlando, Florida.
