New York, Aug. 16 (Jiji Press)--Leading U.S. music company Universal Music Group said Tuesday that it supports the Blu-ray Disc format promoted by Japan's Sony Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. as the standard for next-generation DVDs.
Combining support from UMG and Sony BMG Music Entertainment, the second biggest player, the Blu-ray camp won nearly 50 pct of the U.S. music industry.
The Blue-ray bloc is in the battle for primacy with the team that backs the HD (High-Definition) DVD format proposed by Toshiba Corp. , NEC Corp. and others.
UMG's artist roster includes Sting, Mariah Carey, Elton John and U2.END
