Radialpoint: Zotob Virus Causing Increased Support Calls at Broadband Providers
Posted on: Thursday, 18 August 2005, 15:00 CDT
Radialpoint, the world's largest provider of managed security services to broadband providers, today reported two trends its broadband provider customers are experiencing in the wake of the Zotob virus:
- A medium-to-high increase in support call volume compared to other recent virus outbreaks. Due to the fact that eight or nine variants of the virus have been identified in the last 72 hours, and because of high level of media coverage, consumers are looking to their broadband provider to give answers and protect them. On Wednesday, August 17th a number of Radialpoint's broadband provider customers saw their call volume increase approximately 30-40 per cent relative to normal security related support call volume. - In spite of these high call volumes, the infection rate among subscribers with no anti-virus service has remained low, according to broadband providers. Radialpoint attributes this to the fact that the virus only targets Windows 2000 machines, and to the proper use of patches by Microsoft users."Broadband subscribers continue to turn to their provider for information and protection when a virus outbreak occurs," said Austin Hill, Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Radialpoint. "It's still early but initial indications lead us to believe this virus may cause the most impact for broadband providers since Sasser and Bagle. This reinforces the need for providers to offer simple, effective security services to their subscribers. Protected subscribers are happy subscribers."
Through its broadband provider customers, Radialpoint Security Services reach over 14 million subscribers worldwide.
