4 killed in train-truck crash in eastern Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Four persons were killed and several others injured in a train-truck collision early Friday morning when a train rammed into a truck at an unmanned level crossing near Faisalabad, about 60 kilometers southwest of Lahore, capital of eastern Punjab province, Pakistan.

Railway sources were quoted by the Associated Press of Pakistan as saying that the accident occurred when the Shorkot-Lahore train approached the unmanned crossing between villages Sahianwala and Darul Ehsan. A gravel filled truck suddenly attempted to cross the track, but was hit by the running train.

Two persons including the train driver and a man perched on the truck were killed, while one of the train fireman succumbed to injuries soon afterward, and the other fireman who was also wounded died later in hospital.

There were however no casualties or serious injuries among the passengers.

The crash occurred in the early morning and the track was cleared for traffic within three hours. The truck driver managed to escape from the scene.

Railway sources said that medical and other officers reached the accident site for rescue while relief trains from Lahore and Faisalabad also reached the area to provide help.

They said that at present there are some 2,700 unmanned railway crossings in the system, which pose a real danger, and that road users must wait for the line clear signal before crossing the track.
