Back-to-College Shopping Tops $26 Billion

Posted on: Saturday, 20 August 2005, 18:00 CDT

Back-to-school spending for U.S. college students tops $26 billion for everything from computers to comforters, with the average consumer spending $665.

The annual National Retail Federation Back-to-College Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, conducted by BIGresearch, found most college students plan to buy books, school supplies, clothing and shoes. Also on many shopping lists are: electronics, computer-related accessories and dorm or apartment furnishings.

More than 80 percent of U.S. college campuses offer wireless connectivity to the Internet so the big trend this year is wireless, according to Ralph Bond, Intel's consumer education manager.

The key in shopping for your college bound student this year is when you're shopping for that laptop notebook, get one that has wireless capabilities built in, said Bond.

To keep in touch and save money Bond suggests using VOIP or Voice Over IP, which uses the Internet for telephone service.
