Ethiopia's FM holds talks with Boeing top official
ADDIS ABABA, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopian Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin held talks on Thursday with Scott Carson, executive vice president of the US Boeing firm, on issues aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of the Ethiopian Airlines.
After the discussions, Carson, who is now in Ethiopia for a working visit, told journalists that the Ethiopian Airlines is one of the African airliners that remained competent in the aviation industry for many years.
He said he has learnt from the Ethiopian foreign minister that the Ethiopian government has been playing its level best toward improving the competitiveness of the airways.
According to the executive vice president, Boeing would continue providing technical and capacity building assistance to the Ethiopian Airlines in the years ahead.
Meanwhile, Girma Wako, chief executive officer of the Ethiopian Airlines, said on his part that the cooperation of the Ethiopian Airlines and the Boeing firm has been steadily improving, especially in the last three years.
The chief executive officer disclosed on the occasion that the Ethiopian Airlines had signed a business agreement with the airplane manufacturer for the procurement of 10 Boeing 787 aircraft at a cost of 13 billion birr (1.5 billion US dollars).
Girma said the airliner would be receiving the 10 Boeing 787 airplanes, the latest air planes in the aviation sector, beginning from 2008.
The procurement of the up-to-date airplanes would boost the competitiveness of the airliner and to provide efficient and quality services to its customers, the chief executive officer said.
The Ethiopian Airlines is a major international air carrier and the largest African airline. It offers convenient service from the United States, Europe and Asia. It provides domestic and international air service between Ethiopia and other countries.
The Ethiopian Airlines has a good safety record and is one of the few profitable African airlines. The Ethiopian Airlines also provides training and maintenance to more than a dozen African and middle eastern airlines.
