EDS Announces Support of the Microsoft Office System With Software Solutions

Posted on: Tuesday, 21 October 2003, 06:00 CDT

PLANO, Texas, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- EDS today announced its support of the Microsoft Office System by developing solutions that extend the system's capabilities, delivering innovative tools that enable clients to quickly deploy applications, lower product development costs and increase their overall productivity.

The combination of EDS' leadership in desktop services and the Microsoft Office System will enable clients to access information, integrate processes and exchange knowledge within the applications they regularly use to support their businesses. This collaboration will result in higher levels of customer service and client value.

"EDS brings tremendous experience in helping organizations maximize the value of Microsoft technologies," said Sanjay Parthasarathy, corporate vice president of the Platform Strategy and Partner Group at Microsoft. "With myCOE and its other new solutions, EDS is combining that expertise with the latest advancements in Office -- and helping customers keep costs down while improving productivity throughout the organization."

Flexible EDS Solutions for Microsoft Platform

EDS' myCOE (My Consistent Office Environment) solution uses Microsoft's Accelerator for Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) and zero-touch provisioning technologies to simplify and speed-up the deployment and refreshing of enterprise-wide desktop environments. A new, web-based desktop solution, myCOE combines best-of-breed technology and innovation from EDS, the leader in desktop services, and from Microsoft, the leader in desktop applications.

"myCOE puts new desktop technology into the hands of information workers more quickly and easily," said Kim Stevenson, global offering executive, Desktop and Mobility Services at EDS. "This new model of service delivery and end-user support meets the evolving needs of agile enterprises by providing greater flexibility and cost control over desktop services costs. It's a solution that enables clients to more effectively collaborate with partners, suppliers and customers and have a greater impact on the overall productivity and success of their businesses."

Building upon products within the Microsoft Office System, EDS has also developed three solutions within its Digital Work Environment (DWE) framework. The current DWE solutions -- HR Self-Assist, HR Decision Support and Legal Digital Work Teams -- are designed to incrementally improve the productivity of information workers by enabling them to be informed decision makers. DWE leverages EDS solutions with common Microsoft Office applications to transform basic business processes and drive costs out of the enterprise.

"Microsoft Office System products provide an outstanding platform for developing productivity solutions benefiting the entire enterprise," said Laurel McElreath, director, EDS Microsoft Enterprise Services. "EDS' Digital Work Environment allows companies to reduce basic process transaction costs, facilitate task and project completion, accelerate decision making and improve use of intellectual capital."

EDS PLM Solutions, the market leader in product lifecycle management (PLM), has developed two PLM applications -- Teamcenter Community and Solid Edge Insight -- that are built on Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services and extend the capability of the Microsoft Office System. Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services provides team services and sites to Microsoft Office System and other desktop programs.

Teamcenter Community connects distributed teams to multiple sources of information and services, allows each team member to have a customized view of the information, supports real-time product design reviews and provides tools for collaboration throughout the product lifecycle. Teamcenter Community reduces time to market and decreases product development costs by providing an environment for collaboration with team members inside and outside of their enterprise.

In addition, Solid Edge Insight now based on Windows SharePoint Services, provides an easy-to-use design management system for Solid Edge users. Solid Edge is a powerful 3-D computer-aided design (CAD) software that allows manufacturing companies to design with insight, reduce time to market, increase quality and lower costs.

"Our customers are increasingly gaining real business value from product lifecycle collaboration," said Steve Bashada, vice president, EDS PLM Solutions, Teamcenter Applications. "By integrating the Microsoft Office System and Windows SharePoint Services into our PLM solutions, distributed teams now have work environments that blend and balance structured product and process management with ad-hoc and adaptable team collaboration. This enables them to interact, exchange knowledge and insights and move through common processes while working within familiar environments."
