Electronic Data Systems Is Invited to Bid on $7 Billion U.K. Defense Contract

Dec. 18-- A consortium led by Electronic Data Systems Corp. has been invited to the final round of bidding for a 10-year, $7 billion contract with the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defense, the agency said Wednesday.
Plano-based EDS and its partners, including Fujitsu Services and General Dynamics Corp., will compete against one group led by Lockheed Martin Corp. and another headed by Computer Sciences Corp. A fourth consortium, fronted by International Business Machines Corp., was dismissed from the competition.
The U.K. defense contract, expected to be awarded late in 2004, is similar to EDS' seven-year, $7 billion contract with the U.S. Navy. As in the Navy contract, the U.K. contract winner will bring all of the agency's disparate computer systems into one central network. The winning bidder will then maintain the computer network for the life of the contract.
The U.K. contract includes about 150,000 computer workstations, compared to the more than 300,000 in the U.S. Navy contract.
Winning the defense contract would help reverse EDS' fortunes in the United Kingdom, where the country's tax agency awarded a multibillion-dollar contract long held by EDS to a competitor, Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, earlier this month.
EDS is also pursuing computer services contracts with the U.K. National Health Service.
EDS shares rose 8 cents to $22.78 on Wednesday.
