New Signs Will Alert Drivers About Road Conditions, Weather

Posted on: Tuesday, 30 August 2005, 03:00 CDT

Puzzled about something in our area? "Did You Ever Wonder?" is here to help. Send your questions to the address below.

QUESTION: We noticed a big interstate sign, one that carries messages and Amber Alerts, has been installed on Highway 24 near the new Red Rock Canyon park. We were just wondering about it.

Debbie David

Drivers will spot a number of the VMS (Variable Message Signs) going up in our area. They're an extension of the improvement work on Interstate 25, according to city traffic engineer John Merritt.

The city sign you mention, as well as two the state will install near Cascade/Green Mountain Falls and in the Ute Pass canyon area, will be a blessing for drivers in the winter. They'll carry weather and road alerts and tell drivers when the route is impassable, Merritt said.

There will be a VMS on MLK Bypass just off I-25 and two in another severe weather highway closing spot, the Highway 94 area near Schriever Air Force Base. None are in use yet but they're expected to be by the time snow and ice arrive.

QUESTION: On the southeast corner of Powers and Woodmen is the planned Penrose Hospital. Just south of that spot there is a mound of dirt and all around that mound there are vents evenly spaced on the three sides I can see from Powers as you drive north towards Woodmen. Why do the vents exist?

John Twilbeck

They vent methane gas from an old, covered-over landfill.
