Horizon Wimba Acquires Silicon Chalk

Posted on: Tuesday, 30 August 2005, 09:00 CDT

NEW YORK, Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Horizon Wimba, a provider of collaborative software applications for online education, announced today that it has acquired the assets of Silicon Chalk, the Vancouver-based company that creates software which, from within a class, broadcasts an instructor's prepared notes and lecture materials to local and remote students.

The acquisition allows Horizon Wimba to continue its rapid growth within the educational software industry.

"The acquisition of Silicon Chalk will allow us to utilize the strengths of its core technology in order to improve our own collaborative products," said Tommaso Trionfi, CEO of Horizon Wimba. "Silicon Chalk was a pioneer in educational software, so we're pleased to know its legacy will continue within our own company."

Silicon Chalk's software supports collaboration, communication, exercises, note-taking, and presentations in face-to-face classes where some or all students have laptops, desktops, or tablet computers. It allows distance students to participate and create fully interactive recordings of every learning activity for later learning, review, refinement, and asynchronous participation. Silicon Chalk broadcasts an instructor's prepared notes and lecture material to all participants both local and remote, in real time, and as a result, students can take notes on their computers and these notes are then synched with the lecture material.

This acquisition comes less than two months after Horizon Wimba acquired Connected Learning and its Course Genie content authoring software.
