Mechanics Local Union to Hold Labor Day Rally for Northwest Airlines Strikers in San Francisco

Posted on: Tuesday, 30 August 2005, 18:00 CDT

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- On Labor Day, September 5th, 2005, the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association's Local 9 will hold a Rally to show support for its members at Northwest Airlines, who have been on strike since August 19.

The two-hour rally will start at 11:00 a.m. in front of the old International Terminal at the San Francisco International Airport. "We have received an outpouring of support from many local unions in the San Francisco Bay area, and expect a large number of workers from those other unions to join us for the rally," said Richard Turk, Communications Officer for the Local.

"Northwest has been desperately trying to dupe the flying public into believing that they are flying a full schedule and the aircraft are safe and on time," said Turk. "But we have watched their operations become a shambles. Their shell game of attempting to hide the deteriorating safety, deferred maintenance building up on the aircraft, and late or canceled flights doesn't convince us or the passengers left holding tickets at the gate."

During the final days leading up to the strike Northwest would not move from their six month old opening position of insisting on laying off 53% of the workforce, ending the current pension, more outsourcing, and a 26% cut in pay for the remaining workers.

"We must stand shoulder to shoulder with our AMFA members at Northwest Airlines," said Joseph Prisco, President of Local 9, in a letter to the approximately 3300 Local 9 members, most of who work for United Airlines. "Northwest Airlines technicians, custodians, and cleaners face an orchestrated, union-busting drive by an unholy alliance of Northwest Airlines management, the Federal government, and Wall Street. These AMFA members are standing up for all labor. Workers are following this strike closely as corporate America cheers on Northwest," said Prisco.
