Los Angeles-Based Furniture Maker Plans New Showroom in High Point, N.C.

Posted on: Wednesday, 31 August 2005, 18:00 CDT

Aug. 30--HIGH POINT -- Cisco Brothers Corp. is planning to unveil a new showroom at the former Highland Yarn Mill complex, in time for the Spring International Home Furnishings Market.

Earlier this month, the California-based high-end furniture manufacturing company bought the 280,000-square-foot complex on Mill Avenue, said Alan Weidt, president of Carolina Commercial Properties in Greensboro, on Monday.

The multi-building complex, which is about 1.5 miles from the city's central showroom district, was bought from FPL, a partnership between the estate of the late Jake Froelich, Dave Phillips and George Lyles. Weidt, who brokered the deal, said Cisco plans to build a 20,000-square-foot showroom and a 40,000-square-foot distribution center on the site. The purchase ends the company's search for space in High Point.

In January, an attorney representing Cisco locally said the company initially planned to buy and turn the former National Guard Armory on English Road into a new showroom. Weidt said Cisco was under contract with the armory for planned improvements -- then projected to cost about $1 million -- but the company additionally needed a local distribution site.

The price on the Highland mill site was so good that the company decided to buy it instead of the armory, Weidt said. The property closed on Aug. 18 for $525,000. Cisco plans to lease about 100,000 square feet for warehouse space, Weidt said.

An architect, Martin Senell of Jamestown, and an engineer will consider what upgrades need to be made to the site. Weidt was unable to estimate how much renovations would cost, but said extensive roof work is needed.

Cisco Brothers Corp., based in Los Angeles, recently was ranked 254th on Hispanic Business magazine's annual list of the 500 largest Hispanic-owned companies in the nation, according to the California Chamber of Commerce. Cisco's former showroom is at 300 W. Broad Ave.
