DefenseWeb Develops Online Training for Army Leaders

Posted on: Thursday, 1 September 2005, 09:00 CDT

DefenseWeb Technologies, a premier custom software developer and systems integrator serving Department of Defense (DoD) organizations, today announced it will develop and deploy interactive online training courses that will help the U.S. Army provide support services for families left behind when soldiers are deployed.

DefenseWeb is developing the online training course for the U.S. Army Community & Family Support Center (CFSC) as a subcontractor to Computer Sciences Corporation (NYSE:CSC).

The online training courses will supplement the local on-site training the Army currently provides to Family Readiness Group (FRG) Leaders and Rear Detachment Commanders (RDCs). FRG Leaders are Army family members appointed by the unit commander who have been trained to provide support services to Army families. Rear Detachment Commanders serve a vital role during unit deployment: managing the installation support, the training of replacements, property accountability and the issues relating to family care. They also have significant family readiness responsibilities and provide FRG Leaders with a point of entry into official Army financial, legal and other personnel services systems.

"FRG Leaders and RDCs are vital links between deployed soldiers and their families back home. They provide support for everything from financial and legal matters to communication and counseling," said DefenseWeb CEO Douglas W. Burke. "The online training courses will be highly interactive and self-paced, and will provide assessment and reporting capabilities. The curriculum has been developed with significant input from CFSC and staff members at Army Community Services (ACS) offices located at installations around the globe and builds upon the most successful elements of the local training that is currently provided."

The online training modules are designed to better prepare RDCs and FRG Leaders to serve and assist their unit families. The modules will be grouped in blocks of instruction, will utilize a variety of media and will include tutorials, glossaries, simulations, frequent feedback and pre- and post-instruction assessments.

"Families want to do everything they can to support their deployed soldiers, but it can be difficult to participate in proper training because of our busy schedules," said Traci Cook, spouse of a soldier with 4BCT 4ID at Fort Hood, Texas, who has experience as an FRG Leader. "Supplementing the physical training in an online environment, making it more accessible and self-paced, will be very helpful."
