MagnaChip Semiconductor Launches TFT LCD DriverOne Chip Solution

Posted on: Friday, 2 September 2005, 09:00 CDT

SEOUL, South Korea, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- MagnaChip Semiconductor today announced the launch of its newest TFT LCD driver one chip solution, the MC2TA6201. Key applications for MagnaChip's latest offering include sub- display of mobile phones, MP3 players and other consumer electronic devices.

The MC2TA6201 chip size is 15mm2 and it has a 65K color-display. The chip supports maximum resolution of 128RGBx128 and is available for gate lines ranging from 16 to 128 as well as for 96RGB and 64RGB. This is a single chip solution, which integrates a Gate/Source drive and step-up, oscillator all onto one chip, and runs at single power of 2.5 ~ 3.3V. The solution is also available for low voltage I/O at minimum 1.65V and consumes low power, especially in standby and 8 color mode. It supports various interfaces including 16/8bit 80MPU system and SPI, 16/6 bit RGB and VSYNC. The chip also supports video file and screen shifting function. This solution can be applied to all TFT modules smaller than 1.5", and is used in the external screen of folder type mobile phones, or the main screen of simpler mobile products, as well as other smaller-size color displays.

Yoshio Imamura, Chief Technology Officer of MagnaChip's Display Solutions Division, commented, "This is the first TFT driver IC supporting resolutions below QQVGA. Our latest offering is expected to drive the replacement cycle of color STN or OLED modules of similar size and resolution with TFT modules. In products of resolution below QQVGA, there is no other product competing against TFT driver ICs. By mid 2006, however, it is forecasted that market share of CSTN modules and TFT modules will be reversed, with TFT driver future technology and growth. The price gap between CSTN modules with resolution lower than QQVGA and TFT modules has already reduced notably."

Mass production of this new product is scheduled for January 2006 and it will be manufactured on a 0.18 um process at MagnaChip's wafer fabrication facilities, located in Cheongju, Korea.
