Jaluna, the global leader in virtual infrastructure software for current and next generation networks and connected devices, today announced Jaluna OSware(TM), Linux Edition for Texas Instruments(TM) (TI) TMS320C6000(TM) DSP v1.2. By providing Jaluna customers with the powerful functionality, flexibility and affordability of Linux in association with Texas Instruments' DSP/BIOS operating system and applications on a single DSP, Jaluna continues to illustrate its leadership in the electronics market.
According to Gartner, the market for connected devices will jump to $14 billion by 2009. As this market grows, so will the demand for high-reliability and affordable software, which is crucial for the development of electronic technologies. The shift towards software, coupled with the recent surge in demand for Linux-based embedded applications and technologies, are forcing companies to identify cost-effective ways to leverage existing and legacy infrastructures. Jaluna is the only company providing a software solution to meet these developer needs, by allowing multiple operating systems and their respective applications to co-exist and interoperate on the same hardware.
"The rapid growth of Linux in the embedded industry is forcing many organizations to make hard-line decisions about how to cost-effectively leverage their legacy infrastructure, while integrating disruptive new technologies for the development of next-generation devices," said Steve Balacco, embedded systems software analyst at Venture Development Corporation. "For OEMs looking to adopt Linux and deliver value to their customers, Jaluna OSware for TI DSP v1.2 offers a flexible and cost-effective way for corporations using TI DSPs to protect their legacy investments while they seamlessly migrate to Linux."
Key new features and capabilities of Jaluna OSware, Linux Edition for TI DSP v1.2 include:
-- C++ support (ISO 98): Allows developers to incorporate a more diverse set of Linux and third-party applications within their product.
-- Virtual Ethernet for IP stack support on both Linux and DSP/BIOS: Enables existing DSP/BIOS applications to share the network access hardware with Linux applications.
-- Virtual console for expanded development capability: Simplifies developer control of the system by allowing both system consoles to share the same physical serial device.
-- RTP/RTSP protocol libraries for handling data streams: Provides developers with enhanced support for streaming multimedia devices.
-- Linux kernel module support: Provides developers with the ability to incorporate proprietary enhancements and device drivers.
-- Compatibility with Texas Instruments Code Composer Studio v3.1: Gives developers access to the latest features in the TI tool set.
Using Jaluna OSware, Linux Edition for TI DSP, customers can quickly create a software solution for their multimedia IP devices in which Linux manages all aspects of user interface and network access, while DSP/BIOS simultaneously manages video and audio codecs. Jaluna OSware, Linux Edition for TI DSP is designed for products such as IP set-top boxes, videophones, video surveillance and other low-cost video devices and telecom equipment that require the capabilities and features of Linux, while maintaining the real-time processing of audio, video and wireless networking stacks for devices.
Recent partnerships and customer wins in these markets include:
-- A partnership with Wintech Digital Systems Technology Corp. (OTCBB:WDSP), an embedded video communication solution and DSP development tool provider. With the personal videoconferencing market expected to jump from $21 million in 2003 to $180 million in 2008, Jaluna is continuing to empower OEMs in this market to bring IP consumer videophones with high-quality video capabilities to market faster and reduce the costs involved in manufacturing individual product units. Developers at Wintech, for example, will employ Jaluna OSware, Linux Edition for TI DSP to add Linux applications, such as instant messaging or web browsing, in their Videophone Development Platform (VDP) while preserving their existing software stack running on the TI's DSP/BIOS operating system.
-- A licensing agreement with Amino Communications, a leading provider of consumer premises equipment (CPE) for broadband digital television applications. Using Jaluna OSware, Linux Edition, Amino can run real-time multimedia applications, side-by-side with standard Linux applications, on a single DM642 processor, therefore helping to significantly reduce bill-of-materials cost for price sensitive consumer devices, while enabling the introduction of high end, next-generation features into its AmiNET124 set-top box.
"The market for better and smarter multimedia IP devices is growing at an astonishing rate, and for developers in this market to keep up, they require better software solutions that provide wider options and greater control over the myriad of applications, operating systems and hardware now available," said Peter Richards, Jaluna's recently announced CEO. "Jaluna is the only company to provide a flexible solution for developers to streamline their IP device software architecture and break free from single vendor lock-in."
