Glimmerglass System 300T Fiber Connection Server Revolutionizes Testing
Posted on: Tuesday, 28 October 2003, 06:00 CST
HAYWARD, Calif., Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Glimmerglass, a pioneer of next-generation, transparent connectivity solutions, today announced the Glimmerglass System 300T Fiber Connection Server that is ideally suited for product test and measurement applications at technology companies that serve the telecommunications, data communications, cable and defense industries. The System 300T is an important asset for research/development and manufacturing organizations -- lowering personnel expenses, eliminating capital equipment purchases, reducing new product introduction schedules and improving the quality of their newly engineered and manufactured optical products.
The System 300T establishes, maintains, and manages transparent connections -- direct fiber optic links between devices. Its easy-to-use web-based graphical user interface enables test engineers to quickly view and print detailed fiber connection reports, easily alter individual fiber connections via simple mouse clicks and to save network connection maps to standard text-files so that test configurations can be edited off-line and later used to accurately and instantly reconfigure some or all of a test network. The System 300T can even instantly simulate cut fibers in multiple locations to effectively test the performance of network systems in real-world fault conditions.
"The System 300T is perfect for testing newly engineered and manufactured optical systems and components because a test engineer, sitting at his desk, can rewire a lab in milliseconds instead of days," said Mark Housley, president and CEO of Glimmerglass. "Our customers typically experience returns on their investments within five months or less."
The Glimmerglass System 300T does not destroy the original light signals transmitted by devices-under-test, making it possible for customers to remotely measure bit-error-rates and optical signal levels. Customers have succeeded in automatically testing optical transport systems by combining the System 300T with additional test equipment, such as products manufactured by Agilent Technologies. "Next generation SONET equipment supports flexible configurations of a large number and variety of ports," said Ronnie Neil, Agilent's Market Manager for Next Generation SONET/SDH testing. "Fast, thorough, and cost-effective testing of this equipment requires a combination of a multi-channel, multi-port tester, such as the Agilent OmniBER XM, and a transparent fiber connection server, such as the Glimmerglass System 300T."
Fully transparent, the Glimmerglass System 300T is compatible with any device connected to any fiber making it the most flexible, future proof solution available. There are never any additional blades to purchase or upgrades required in order to support new network standards.
About the Glimmerglass System 300T
The System 300T Fiber Connection Server supports 850nm, 1310nm and 1550nm fiber communications in rings, ring interconnections, star configurations and mesh networks. Built to adhere to strict telecom standards, the System 300T can be ordered in configurations of 32x32 (input fibers x output fibers), 64x64, 80x80 or a 40x40 port option that can be upgraded over time in packages of 8x8 fiber ports.
The System 300T is currently available globally through Glimmerglass and its distribution partners. Company representatives tailor proposals that may include optional system configurations and features appropriate for customers' specific application requirements. The suggested retail price for the System 300T starts at $70,000.
About the Glimmerglass System 300 Family of Products
In companion releases today, the company announced two other members of the System 300 product family: the System 300E Layer 1 Fiber Switch that is ideally suited for enterprise networks and the System 300V Fiber Routing Switcher designed for managing video over fiber. The companion products include:
-- System 300E for the High Performance Enterprise: This Layer 1 Fiber
Switch eliminates the high costs of protecting multi-vendor,
multi-protocol and multi-data-rate networks against equipment outages
and cut fibers.
-- System 300V for Managing Video on Fiber: This Fiber Routing Switcher
establishes zero-latency simulcast connections over any distance.
At the core of each System 300 is Glimmerglass' Brilliance(TM) micro-photonics technology, comprised of Brilliant Connections(TM), a very low loss, highly scalable, fully transparent switching architecture; and Brilliant Controls(TM), an intelligent, fast, reliable, and patented control technology.
