South Korean Ruling Party Head to Discuss Six-Way Talks During China Visit

Seoul, 8 September: The chairman of South Korea's ruling Uri Party is to visit China this month for discussions with Chinese officials on ways to resolve the North Korean nuclear dispute, a party official said Thursday [8 September].

Chairman Moon Hui-sang will make the trip on 22-24 September, according to party spokesman Rep. Jun Byung-hun.

The visit comes at the invitation of the Chinese Communist Party, Jun said.

"Chairman Moon plans to hold discussions with the Chinese side on ways to peacefully resolve the North Korean nuclear issue and increase exchanges between the parties," Jun told a press briefing.

The spokesman said the party chairman is also expected to invite legislators from the Chinese party to the Fourth International Conference of Asian Political Parties. The South Korean ruling party is to host the biennial conference next September in Seoul.

Jun said Moon will meet with a number of ranking, or "well- known," Chinese officials, but said his party is still trying to arrange the meetings.

The ruling party chairman's visit comes at a time when the United States, China, Japan, Russia and the two Koreas are working to defuse the North Korean nuclear dispute through negotiations.

The latest round of the six-nation talks over the North's nuclear weapons programme went into a recess last month. They are expected to resume next week following a North Korean proposal to reconvene the round on Sept. 13.
