Hello, You'Ve Reached My iPod; Apple Unveils Combination Music Player and Cellphone

Posted on: Thursday, 8 September 2005, 18:00 CDT

Apple Computer introduced several new products Wednesday, including a cellphone/iPod combination and a thinner version of the iPod music player.

The Motorola cellphone is the first to come equipped with Apple's iTunes software, allowing a user to transfer about 100 songs from computer to phone.

Cingular Wireless will sell the phone for $250 with a two-year service contract. Cingular spokeswoman Ellen Webner said the Motorola "ROKR" phone would go on sale today in New Jersey Cingular Wireless stores.

As with popular Apple iPod, users will be able to purchase music via the iTunes online music store, download to a PC or Mac, and transfer the songs to the Motorola phone using a USB cable.

The phone comes with ear buds and has a camera, the company said.

Apple tried to keep Wednesday's announcement, made at a press conference in San Francisco, under wraps but speculation that the company was about to unveil a cellphone/iPod combo surfaced several weeks ago.

Apple has sold more than 21 million iPods since introducing the gadget in 2001. Apple's move to include its music service on a cellphone comes as more companies are including digital music players in their phones.

First Albany Capital analyst Joel Wagonfeld maintained his company's "buy" rating on Apple shares Wednesday and revised stock estimates up, writing in a note to clients that the company will deliver "solid" computer and iPod sales in the current quarter "as well as continued momentum based on product introductions and increasing brand visibility."

Apple also introduced a smaller, thinner iPod called the Nano, which is smaller than its iPod Mini version. The Nano will sell for $250 and come with four gigabytes of storage space.

The company also said it has teamed up with car makers Acura, Audi, Honda, and Volkswagen to sell a "seamless" iPod with those autos.

Shares of Apple fell 12 cents Wednesday to close at $48.68.
