Hitachi, Toshiba, Others Eye System Chip Production Venture

Posted on: Friday, 9 September 2005, 12:00 CDT

Sep. 9--TOKYO -- Hitachi Ltd., Toshiba Corp., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. and other major electronics manufacturers are negotiating to jointly establish a semiconductor production firm, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported Friday.

The report said the joint venture will invest 200-300 billion yen in a next-generation production site, with plans to bring it onstream as early as 2007.

The enterprise will focus on mass-producing system chips and allow these electronics firms to compete against foreign rivals such as Intel Corp. and South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co., the report said.

NEC Electronics Corp. and Renesas Technology Corp., a joint venture of Mitsubishi Electric Corp. and Hitachi, are also participating in the joint venture negotiations, the report said.
