AccuRev Helps SanDisk Streamline Software Development Processes

Posted on: Tuesday, 13 September 2005, 09:00 CDT

AccuRev(R).Inc., developer of the first breakthrough in software configuration management (SCM) in over 20 years, today announced that SanDisk Corporation, the world's leading supplier of flash storage card products, is using AccuRev software to streamline its software development process. The AccuRev software was selected to replace a popular open-source SCM solution that SanDisk determined could not keep pace with the distributed development demands of the company's business.

AccuRev software is helping SanDisk to organize its distributed software development operations across its full portfolio of 55 products. SanDisk employs 150 engineers at facilities in California, Scotland and Israel, who are responsible for managing a variety of product requirements and development schedules. Using AccuRev's stream-based SCM solution, SanDisk can more easily and efficiently manage code in a variety of development stages, eliminating the need for developers to keep track of where code belongs in a distributed environment, traditionally an extremely challenging and time-consuming task.

"AccuRev's solution represents a significant business advantage for SanDisk, freeing our globally distributed developers from inefficient software version control processes," said Andy Tomlin, director of firmware and software, SanDisk. "With AccuRev software, our developers have the flexibility they need to quickly, and more easily, complete their assignments - and that translates into a more efficient and higher quality operation. In addition, AccuRev simplified SCM administration, enabling SanDisk to cut administrative time in half."

Today's distributed development environments pose a number of challenges to software developers, from managing different time zones, language barriers and communications, to merging changes and monitoring network performance, in addition to carefully tracking legal and intellectual property issues. These challenges have been greatly reduced with tools like those offered by AccuRev, which automate the tracking and coordination of the entire software development process.

AccuRev addressed a number of SanDisk's key evaluation requirements, including the need for: a transaction-based solution capable of atomic changes; a non-file based mechanism for grouping changes; support for multiple platforms and projects, with a mechanism to manage common code; low administrative overhead; and support for a variety of design practices.

"Organizations like SanDisk are discovering there really is a better way to develop software in today's distributed environments," said Damon Poole, CTO and founder of AccuRev. "SanDisk is seeing first-hand how AccuRev software can help them be far more productive."
