Intel introduces processor for low-end mobile PCs

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) - Intel, the world's largest computer chip maker, introduced Wednesday a Celeron processor at 2. 50 GHz for low-end mobile personal computers.

"These processors deliver the right combination of features at the appropriate price point for the value PC market segment," said Intel in a statement.

Based on 0.13-micron process technology, the mobile Celeron processor features a 400 MHz system bus, 256 KB of cache and is designed to fit into a 35-watt thermal envelope, making the processor suitable for full-size and thin-and-light form factors, according to Intel.

The processor, compatible with the broad range of hardware and software available, is priced at 149 US dollars a piece in 1,000- unit quantities.

According US hi-tech market research firm IDC, Intel increased its worldwide computer chip market share to 82.6 percent, while its major rival AMD lost share and stood at 16.5 percent.

But analysts say AMD is currently gaining market share in Eastern Europe. For example, AMD currently has 36 percent share in Poland and 25 percent in Russia.

Intel's new value mobile processor is expected to be of help to the company in competing with AMD processors in the fast growing notebook PC market, especially in the price conscious Eastern European market.
