Intel launches enhanced Xeon processor

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- The world largest computer chip maker Intel Corp. announced an enhanced Xeon processor Monday for dual processor (DP) servers and workstations.

Intel said the new chip features the top performance and fastest clock speed in the its Xeon processor family DP line, as well as drop-in compatibility for highly valued investment protection.

"The way we stay on top of the market segment is to consistently deliver better performance to meet demanding customer requirements," said Ajay Malhotra, general manager, Enterprise Marketing & Planning for Intel's Enterprise Platforms Group.

The new Intel Xeon processor, running at 3.20 GHz, features a 1 MB cache and a 533 MHz system bus. It is drop-in compatible with existing systems designed with the Intel E7501 (for servers) or Intel E7505 (for workstations) chipsets, Intel PRO Gigabit Ethernet Network Connections and Intel Server RAID Controllers.

Intel said the new chip is designed for use in general-purpose servers for Web hosting, data caching, search engines, security, streaming media and high performance computing, and in workstations for digital content creation, mechanical and electrical design, financial analysis, and 3D modeling.

The company said its new Xeon processor at 3.20 GHz is now available worldwide for Intel's list price of 851 US dollars each in 1,000-unit quantities.
