IT Managers Fear Computer Makers Will Abandon Service Commitment, According to New Amtek Survey

Amtek Computer Services' latest survey reveals that one of the greatest fears facing the IT community is manufacturers abandoning support of viable computing platforms.
The poll of more than 200 information technology (IT) managers was conducted last month during a series of Amtek-hosted web seminars on computer-service trends. More than half of those surveyed cited manufacturers' lack of commitment to service as their greatest concern.
"Thousands of companies have significant investments in aging computing platforms. Only a fraction of those companies are aware that third-party service companies provide an alternative to dealing with the manufacturer," said Amtek's Director of Sales and Marketing Tim Peterson. "Third-party service providers routinely charge up to 50 percent less than the manufacturer, for a level of service that is often more responsive."
Peterson cited HP's decision to abandon support of its HP3000 server platform as an example of manufacturer ambivalence toward aging systems.
Amtek has been providing expert service to the HP community for more than 25 years, dating back to the HP1000 server platform. Many companies have signed up for Amtek's HP Legacy Support Program, which provides affordable, ongoing service to companies that are determined to continue running their business on the HP3000. The program includes flexible maintenance plans, an extensive stockpile of obsolete parts and nationwide service from an experienced field support staff.
Many other firms have turned to Amtek to help navigate their migration away from HP3000, a process which can require two years or more. Amtek has been providing on-site computer repair and maintenance to enterprises nationwide since 1980. Its customers report savings of up to $100,000 per year after freeing themselves from manufacturers' service contracts.
