JBoss Launches PortletSwap for Growing JBoss Portal Community

Posted on: Wednesday, 14 September 2005, 09:00 CDT

JBoss(R), Inc., the Professional Open Source company, today announced PortletSwap, a one-stop-shop for Java Portlet Specification (JSR-168) compliant portlets, themes and layouts for use in the JBoss Portal. Through PortletSwap, JBoss community members can contribute and share a growing number of pre-configured portlets, which are reusable Web components that display relevant information, such as enterprise application data and access, email, and news. In support of this initiative, JBoss is also announcing the First Annual PortletSwap Meet, a competition running through October 25, 2005 to find the most creative and distinguished portlet designs.

With JBoss Portal, JBoss continues to drive open source up the stack from the application server to higher levels in the software infrastructure, including portal software. Averaging more than 10,000 downloads per month, JBoss Portal is quickly becoming one of the most popular open source Java portals today. PortletSwap will help fuel this already growing community and encourage participation in JBoss Portal's evolution. Contributed portlets, themes and layouts--which will be tested for operability with JBoss Portal--will make it easier than ever for developers to build and deploy on JBoss Portal.

"Portal technology remains one of the most expensive areas of middleware today. As JBoss has successfully done with the application server, we are now bringing this high-end technology to the mass market at a zero-cost software license so that any enterprise can make portals a part of their business," said Pierre Fricke, director of product management, JBoss, Inc. "PortletSwap will help us continue growing the JBoss Portal community while at the same time providing functional and creative 'out of the box' portlets, themes and layouts."

Since the release of JBoss Portal 2.0 in June, the project has gained substantial momentum and interest from outside contributors. JBoss Portal community members and partners making contributions to JBoss Portal include:

-- AEM Corporation, JBoss' first federal certified systems integrator, is implementing JBoss Portal in a large deployment with the U.S. Navy. Additionally, AEM has contributed a Struts bridge that enables Struts-based applications to be integrated into JBoss Portal.

-- Alfresco, a startup led by former Documentum executives, is building an advanced content management system that will integrate into JBoss Portal.

-- CIGNEX Technologies, a JBoss certified system integrator, is integrating JBoss jBPM and workflow into JBoss Portal.

-- Novell, which provides worldwide support for the JBoss Enterprise Middleware System, is contributing to JBoss Portal capabilities such as Web Services for Remote Portlets (WSRP) and enhancements to the Layout API.

John Newton, chief technology officer, Alfresco, Inc. commented, "As a newly certified JBoss solutions partner, Alfresco is excited to participate in the vibrant JBoss community, and has already contributed a JavaServer Faces framework to build an advanced content management portlet on the JBoss Portal. We anticipate that as JBoss Portal evolves, the community will only continue to grow."
