Innovative Residency Program Integrates CEOs into FedEx Institute

Posted on: Friday, 16 September 2005, 12:00 CDT

The new CEO in Residence program at the FedEx Institute of Technology at the University of Memphis allows distinguished business leaders to share practical knowledge with students and researchers while cultivating a personal project utilizing the unique resources available at the Institute. Funding for the program, announced today, is part of a recent $5 million gift from FedEx Corp.

Scott Messmore, president and CEO of MBI and a former Vice President with Steelcase, is the Institute's first CEO in Residence. "We're excited to begin our program with someone of Scott's caliber and knowledge," said Craig Grossman, executive director of the Institute. "His creative thinking, dedication to bettering the community, and passion for learning make him a perfect candidate for this program." MBI, the Mid-South's largest office furnishings business, was founded in 1995 to represent Steelcase in the Memphis Area.

Messmore said of his selection, "In addition to developing a significant project, I'm looking forward to creating ties between industry leaders and the Institute executive team. I'm also honored to serve as a mentor to students."

Projects could range in focus from business to technology to community, and are created and driven by the CEO in collaboration with the Institute. After a year, the CEO presents the results of the project and future plans to the public.

The Institute's CEO in Residence program differs from similarly named programs throughout the nation. "The outcomes of this program are not necessarily traditional research or a report," said Grossman. "We believe the outcomes should be innovative and applicable to our world. We want results that have the potential to improve lives. This program is not an honorific or an award. It's a serious engagement that requires creativity, determination and dedication on the part of the CEO. For our part, we make available the considerable resources of the Institute to support the success of the CEO and our project."

The $5 million gift from FedEx Corp. will help build the infrastructure for conducting key research, facilitate the recruitment of new faculty members, and support Institute initiatives.

The FedEx Institute of Technology at the University of Memphis is the South's leading interdisciplinary research laboratory system where Fortune 500 companies, and others, are pooling people, technical resources, and research dollars to solve modern-day challenges with interdisciplinary research teams. Simply, the Institute is the bridge to the Mid-South's future in innovation. For more information, visit fedex.memphis.edu or call 901-678-5105.
