Drivers Save Cash With Park and Ride

Posted on: Saturday, 17 September 2005, 06:00 CDT

A FREE park and ride scheme in the West Midlands is saving more than 80 tankers of petrol a year.

The increase in forecourt prices means that the service offered by public transport promoter Centro-PTA has reduced annual motoring costs in the region by almost pounds 10 million.

Coun Gary Clarke, chairman of the policy-setting West Midlands Passenger Transport Authority, said drivers were cashing in by leaving their car behind as worries over petrol costs mount.

He said: "A public transport user consumes three and a half times less energy than a motorist.

"Now as petrol prices increase, switching to public transport is going to be even more attractive."

Centro provides 5,874 spaces at rail and Metro park and ride sites
