December 17, 2003

HERNDON, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Dec. 17, 2003–The Software Productivity Consortium’s Board of Directors has appointed James A. Kane to the position of President and Chief Executive Officer, effective January 19, 2004. The Consortium’s current President and CEO, Werner Schaer, will retire in January 2004, while continuing to serve on the Consortium’s Board of Directors. SPC is a nonprofit group that helps its member companies and affiliates adopt new processes and technologies to improve profitability.

Kane was most recently Chief Executive Officer of Federal Sources, Inc. in McLean, VA, a leading market intelligence and consulting firm serving the federal IT marketplace. He previously held senior executive positions with GTE Information Systems, Chantilly VA (acquired by DynCorp in 1999), GTE SPACENET Corporation (McLean, VA), GTE Government Systems Corp., and with leading Internet pioneer Bolt Beranek and Newman Inc. (BBN) earlier in his career. He was also Assistant Secretary, Executive Office of Economic Affairs for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the 1970s.

“I am delighted to welcome Jim Kane as the Consortium’s new CEO, and believe he is ideally qualified to continue our growth toward an ever-broader and deeper membership within North America,” says Schaer, who led SPC from $11M to $20M annual revenue during his five-year tenure. “Jim’s unparalleled expertise in the federal IT and information systems marketplace, in tandem with his exemplary accomplishments in applying technology to enhance business productivity make him an excellent choice for this position. Our member companies and government affiliates, as well as our staff, will all benefit significantly from Jim’s expertise and leadership.”

“The Consortium’s Board of Directors salutes Werner Schaer’s significant contributions over the last five years, and agrees that Jim Kane is ideally suited to take on the SPC’s leadership and build upon Werner’s success,” says Paul Kruelle, Vice President of the Unisys Health Information Management Practice and Chairman of the Consortium’s Board of Directors. “As with other Consortium members, Unisys considers the federal IT space to represent an essential growth area for the foreseeable future. Jim’s success in transforming Federal Sources Inc. into the thought leader in the public sector IT market, and his real-world program experience in our realm, will be key contributors to his success at SPC.”

Kane is highly regarded within the federal IT industry both for his vision on the direction of the market, and for his ability to analyze and synthesize the impact of diverse technical, policy, and competitive forces upon the market. He is a frequent speaker at industry forums, investor meetings and in company boardrooms, and is regularly quoted in the Washington-area and national IT and business press. He holds his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, and his B.S. from LeMoyne College, Syracuse, NY.
