K-PAR Announces Archimedia Support for Sony 23GB Professional Disc for DATA Products

Posted on: Wednesday, 3 December 2003, 06:00 CST

CALGARY, Alberta--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 3, 2003--K-PAR Archiving Software, an international developer and distributor of archival storage management software to the open systems and network storage markets, announced support for the new Sony 23GB Professional Disc for DATA(TM) drive and media technology with their flagship Archimedia hierarchical storage management software product. Archimedia provides a simple and intuitive software interface that enables centralized network management of CD/DVD, Magneto-Optical (MO), and now, the new blue laser-based Professional Disc for DATA stand-alone drives and automated storage libraries for Desktop, Workgroup and Enterprise archival storage applications.

The new Sony Professional Disc for DATA format offers 23GB of capacity per single-sided disc and a sustained data transfer rate of 11 MB/sec, making it ideal for professional data-intensive applications such as document and medical imaging, e-mail archiving, enterprise content management, multimedia projects, graphics design and audio/video editing.

"We are very pleased to announce support for the Sony Professional Disc for DATA technology with Archimedia," said Michael Johnson, director of Business Development at K-PAR. "We can now offer a migration path for legacy customers seeking greater capacity, higher performance and a long-term storage technology roadmap for the future" Johnson added.

Archimedia v4.3.1 hierarchical storage management software offers automated mixed media support to simplify legacy management of ISO-9660, RockRidge, Joliet, NTFS, Sun UFS, UDF and K-PAR's WFS (Write-Once File System) file systems concurrently thru a single graphical user interface. Archimedia offers users and applications media technology independence by virtualizing both stand-alone drives and libraries. Archimedia also provides storage virtualization capabilities to any CIFS or NFS network client, with no client-side license requirement, allowing shared access to Archimedia-managed storage for many network users. Archimedia provides quick, on-line access to data stored within a Sony Professional Disc for DATA archive by incorporating sophisticated mag-disk caching of metadata and includes an automated server-side data migration scheduler. An optional API toolkit is also available for the Archimedia v4.3.1 release for custom OEM and System Integrator application requirements.

"We are pleased to be working with K-PAR in support of our blue laser optical disc drive and media technology," said Rick Thong, manager of OEM optical storage solutions marketing for Sony Electronics' Component Solutions Business Division. "K-PAR is an ISV that has the experience and customer-base that can provide assistance to introduce our new technology to the legacy archival storage market," Thong added.

The combination of Archimedia and the Sony Professional Disc for DATA technology offers one of the most cost-effective, online, random-access archival storage management software solutions available today, with software pricing starting as low as $250.00. Archimedia is available for Microsoft Windows NT/2000/2003/XP and Solaris (Sparc and Intel) operating system platforms, with additional operating system platforms soon to be announced.
