Yozan to End PHS Business, Shift to New Wireless Broadband Services

Sep. 22--TOKYO -- Yozan Inc. said Thursday it will terminate most of its personal handy-phone system services in Japan at the end of November and shift to new wireless broadband services in December.
Yozan took over the PHS services from a Tokyo Electric Power Co. unit in August 2002 and later saw the number of PHS service customers fall on the advance of cellular phone services.
Cumulative losses from the PHS services have exceeded 10 billion yen, Yozan said.
The shift will allow Yozan to substantially reduce losses and benefit from the new local area network services, it said.
The company said it expects to earn 228 million yen in unconsolidated net profit on 7,795 million yen in sales in the year to March 2007 after incurring a loss of 5,037 million yen on 2,452 million yen in sales the previous year.
