Dubai and Saudi Rail Systems in the Spotlight

The need for public transport infrastructure in the GCC, which industry leaders have named one of the most pressing issues facing local governments in the region, will be discussed at the second Middle East Rail Project Conference, to be held in Dubai on September 27 and 28.
Two leading rail projects the Dubai Metro Project and the Riyadh Light Railway Project will be the subject of debate at the event, organised by MEED Conferences. As well as key case studies, more than 150 delegates will hear of business opportunities from as far afield as North Africa and Iran.
Looking at Dubai, the population has grown at an average annual rate of 6 per cent, while the road network has increased from 200 kilometres in 1964 to 9,100km by the end of last year.
This growth, while indicative of the development of Dubai as a commercial and business hub, has fast-tracked the need for a public transport solution, according to Edmund O'Sullivan, the conference chairman.
O'Sullivan said: "The Middle East is the fastest growing region in the world. Public transport infrastructure will provide the mobility that this region needs in order to maintain its level of growth in the longer term.
"Delegates will be able to gain best-practice knowledge from the most successful international projects around the world, as well as really understand the opportunities available in the Middle East."
The keynote speaker will be Eng. Nasser Ahmed Saheed, general co- ordinator of the Dubai Metro Project. He will be joined by Jean- Philippe Berger, Project Manager for Arriyadh LTR Project of Semaly who will provide an update on the Saudi project.
Representatives from the Saudi Railways Organisation and Razin Group will also be present at the conference giving the audience the complete picture on future developments in one of the most important territories in the Middle East.
Joining them will be Alfred Berg, general manager of Siemens LLC Transportations Systems Group for the Middle East; Bahram Ababafi, deputy of operation at Tehran Urban and Suburban Railway Co. and Eng. Mahmoud El-Ogaizy, head of technical studies central department at the National Authority for tunnels, Egypt.
The Middle East Rail Project Conference will be held at the Courtyard by Marriott in Dubai, on September 27 and 28. Already confirmed as sponsors are International Contracts Consultancy; Dubai Rapid Link Consortium; NOUR Communications; and SYSTRA.
