American Airlines Ramps Up Evacuation Efforts in Anticipation of Hurricane Rita; Airline Flies Larger Aircraft Out of Houston

FORT WORTH, Texas, Sept. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- American Airlines is substituting larger aircraft on some flights out of Houston today to accommodate additional passengers wanting to evacuate the area due to Hurricane Rita.

American is substituting two Boeing 777s and two Boeing 767s -- the largest aircraft types in the airline's fleet -- in place of smaller narrowbody planes that are normally flown out of Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport. In all, the larger aircraft will provide about 360 additional seats compared to the narrowbody planes. That's equivalent to adding about three additional narrowbody flights.

American plans to operate a full schedule today (Thursday) out of Bush Intercontinental. The airline has a total of 18 daily flights from there to Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago and Miami.

In anticipation of the hurricane, American has also posted information on its Web site, AA.com, for passengers traveling to or from the affected areas. American is allowing those customers to change their reservations without change fees. For details, visit http://www.aa.com/ .
