Verizon to Extend Video-Over-Fiber Service

Sep. 23--With its Keller system up and running, Verizon Communications Inc. said Thursday that it will launch FiOS television service elsewhere in North Texas by the end of 2005.
Verizon said it would expand its video-over-fiber service this year to Sachse, Westlake and Wylie, plus other area cities.
"I think the number of people we're serving with FiOS TV by the end of next year will be substantial," said Bob Ingalls, president of Verizon's retail markets group.
Verizon had selected Keller as the site to introduce its fiber-optic system carrying voice and high-speed data. It formally added FiOS TV to that network on Thursday.
Charter Communications Inc., which serves Keller with cable television, played down the entry of another rival.
"We've always had competition in that market. Satellite is fierce in Texas, let me tell you," he said. "Competition is not new to us."
Verizon's rates announced Thursday are below Charter's regular rates, but Charter is fighting back with promotional rates.
Although Verizon has formally launched its first television service, it still is negotiating with some major providers. It announced a deal Wednesday to offer the Disney Co.'s programming, including Disney, ABC and ESPN channels.
