Up for a Vote: a Bigger, Better Airport Welcome Sign
Posted on: Saturday, 24 September 2005, 00:00 CDT
Sep. 23--A new sign that would welcome travelers entering the Fort Wayne International Airport from the west could get the go-ahead from the Airport Authority when it meets Monday.
The 2005 budget contains $160,000 for a sign on Airport Expressway near the future Ardmore Avenue extension and Indianapolis Road. Local architect Martin Riley Mock has been hired to design the sign for no more than $52,000, said Rick McElroy, airport treasurer. The remaining money will fund the sign's construction and installation.
The Airport Authority is set to vote whether to tell the architect to begin the design phase.
McElroy would not speculate on the sign's potential size, but its aim will be to welcome an increasing number of motorists off Interstate 69 to the airport's main entrance. The Ardmore extension, which will create a direct route from the north, is expected to increase traffic. Construction on the road is scheduled to begin in the spring.
Currently, only small, green signs with airplane sketches guide people to the airport. The new sign will be an upgrade, McElroy said. "We want to make sure it is something that represents the airport and the community well."
