Quality of Service and Bandwidth Management Features Help ISPs Increase ROI by Applying Fair-Use Policies to All Users Automatically; No Network Engineer Required
APconnections announced today new functionality for its NetEqualizer (www.netequalizer.com) product line. NetEqualizer is a layer 7 bridge that automatically adjusts network bandwidth and provides network administrators and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) with a very cost-effective Quality of Service (QoS) solution for congested networks.
"Poor customer Internet response times are caused by network latency, which occurs when the available bandwidth is tied up by one or more users on a network segment," said Art Reisman, APconnections' Chief Technology Officer. "APconnections has developed a simple, easy-to-use bandwidth shaping appliance that works automatically. No network management skills are required; just plug it in and it works. NetEqualizer is the perfect solution for any company or service provider that is trying to maximize Internet bandwidth and guarantee a premium experience for all users on a network."
Before bandwidth equalizing technology was invented, network managers generally had to depend on three limited techniques to shape traffic on a network: queuing, rate control or rate limiting.
Queuing. Queuing provides a buffer to store packets until the network can retransmit them. Unfortunately, congested network queues drop packets and retransmission requests can significantly impact a network's performance.
Rate Control. Rate control uses layer 7 packet signatures to classify traffic. Application signatures change constantly and administrators are faced with expensive and time consuming processes of managing updates.
Rate Limiting. Rate limiting is often a simple approach taken to set fixed bandwidth for individual customers. It is not uncommon for an ISP to use a single T1 (1.5 Mbps) to serve 200 customers. Divide 1.5 Mbps of bandwidth by only 20 users set at 256 Kbps per user and it is easy to see where simple rate limiting quickly fails and won't work at all for 200 customers.
NetEqualizer's Difference
NetEqualizer differs from static, manually controlled bandwidth management tools by using a built-in "Fairness Algorithm" to dynamically control traffic based on real-time network usage. The Fairness Algorithm balances application level traffic by adding latency to low priority tasks so that high-priority tasks receive sufficient bandwidth. NetEqualizer controls the traffic from both the inbound and outbound directions. A free, in-depth white paper on the Fairness Algorithm's equalizing technology is available at http://www.netequalizer.com/wantswp.htm.
NetEqualizer's New Multi-Trunk BETA Functionality
Recently, APconnections also announced a carrier-class beta solution that allows only one appliance to be installed and allows RBOCs, CLECs, ISPs, T1 managers or enterprise customers to manage multiple large bandwidth trunks, such as T1 or DS3 circuits. Instead of installing a bridge on each network segment, the beta appliance is placed deeper in the network where it allows network managers to shape bandwidth on up to 100 T1's and shape bandwidth for up to 10,000 users. Customers can sign up for a free evaluation of the Multi-Trunk Beta product by calling Art Reisman at 720-560-3568.
Pricing/Availability
NetEqualizer is available now and solutions start at $995. Customers with questions or that want to order the product should call 888-287-2492.
