Inveneo to Demo Solar- and Bicycle-Powered VoIP System at INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference & EXPO Fall 2005

Posted on: Monday, 26 September 2005, 09:00 CDT

Nonprofit group bringing communications services to developing communities will appear at Leading VoIP Event at Los Angeles Convention Center

TMC announced today that Inveneo will be demonstrating its innovative solar- and bicycle-powered, linux-based VoIP system at next month's INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference & EXPO Fall 2005 (www.itexpo.com).

The conference runs Monday, October 24th through Thursday, October 27th at the L.A. Convention Center. Inveneo will have their demo running during exhibit hours on Tuesday, October 25th, Wednesday, October 26th and Thursday, October 27th.

Inveneo has built this system which uses a Linux-based PC with a VoIP connection that's powered by either a bicycle or solar panel. This "rugged-ized" solution is designed to withstand the African climate and has no moving parts and is designed to be serviced remotely, if required.

Inveneo, working with various international relief organizations, is installing this "VoIPcycle" in remote African villages that have neither electricity nor phone access. The Inveneo solution hop-scotches to the nearest PSTN connection point through a series of transmitters and receivers, thus providing telephone and Internet service.

Inveneo will set up the bicycle (on a frame especially designed by Inveneo to be easily copied by local blacksmiths) which is connected to a battery, which in turn powers the Linux box, connected to the VoIP gear, connected to an antenna!

TMC president Rich Tehrani has been impressed with the concept since he first heard about it many few months ago.

"I wrote about Inveneo and their bicycle-powered VoIP solution this past April 2005. It is a unique application that will raise the profile of VoIP technology, enabling our industry to further permeate the mainstream. Many of us who have made a living in the VoIP industry should be proud that this same technology is being used in Third World countries to allow people to communicate with friends and relatives more easily and inexpensively," said Tehrani.

Tehrani continued, "We take telephone calling for granted, but in remote villages, even if they have the means they have to travel many kilometers to get to a telephone. With the advent of the solar and bicycle powered VoIP phone, these residents can now communicate with friends and relatives around the world. Inveneo allows our VoIP industry to give back to the less-privileged in the world."

INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference & EXPO, held since 1999, is the world's largest and best-attended VoIP trade show. Last February, TMC's INTERNET TELEPHONY attracted over 6,200 top buyers and sellers of IP Telephony products and services. For this upcoming October show, TMC projects total attendance to exceed 7,500.

In addition to the Inveneo demonstration, the event features four days of conferences and keynotes by Carly Fiorina, Michael Powell, Skype founder Niklas Zennstrom, plus senior executives from Yahoo!, AOL, Microsoft, NEC, Toshiba, Nortel, Lucent Technologies, Microsoft, Siemens, Cisco, Vonexus, Aculab, Interactive Intelligence, Inter-Tel, BrandX, Deloitte & Touche and Digium.

Registration for the show is now open. Anyone interested may register by visiting http://www.voipdeveloper.com. Booth space is nearly sold out. Interested vendors should contact Dave Rodriguez: drodriguez@tmcnet.com or 203-852-6800, ext. 146.
